Jen Mills presents You Only Have What You Remember from Sept. 2 - Oct.2, 2010. Consisting of over 100 salt bowls, this installation creates a landscape exploring the topography of memory. Each bowl - empty and waiting - sits on a pedestal that varies in height, forming the personal landscape of a bed. There is an indentation in the middle, a reference to a presence long gone. The installation is a place where safety and vulnerability meet, creating a sense of quiet meditation.

You Only Have What You Remember is an installation of over 100 salt bowls that creates a landscape exploring the topography of memory. Each bowl - empty and waiting - sits on a pedestal that varies in height, forming the personal landscape of a bed. There is an indentation in the middle, a reference to a presence long gone. The installation is a place where safety and vulnerability meet, creating a sense of quiet meditation.

Salt is familiar:  we know what it tastes like, feels like. Our bodies contain salt, and our survival depends on it; salt is vital to the nerve cells' communication and information processing from the moment of conception to death. It has many religious uses involving purification, and its connection with the landscape is fundamental.

Measuring 10 feet by 17 feet, the landscape of bowls fills the space, the installation can be walked around but not touched. A tension surrounds the piece, as an accumulation of individual forms holds itself together through sheer numbers and the material of sea salt, creating a dialogue between the body and topography.

The exhibition also includes drawings related to the installation, executed in watercolor on paper and plaster.
